Governance Mentoring programme

Following on from the launch of the NZAL Mentoring Programme in February 2015, Janine Smith, Founder of The Boardroom Practice facilitated a one and a half day workshop that addressed some of the key issues that were discussed at the launch.

Held on Thursday 21st May, Friday 22nd May, 2015, EY, 2 Takutai Square, Britomart, Auckland

The format for the sessions was customised to increase the amount of participant interaction and questioning aided by an extensive workbook with relevant and topical articles to read. The experienced governor’s panel was a highlight where participants’ had the chance to not only hear from experienced governors about their journey in to governance, but also to have the opportunity for smaller intimate groups discussion and questioning when each of the governors rotated around the groups.

“The two days governance workshop is very beneficial to me. I am heavily involved in preparing financial reports for the board and report to the Finance and Audit committees. It helps me understanding the board’s perspective better, so I am able to provide more relevant information to help them to make a better decision. The workshop covers lots of inside knowledge, real case studies and very lively discussion. It also makes me better prepared for future, when I became a board member”.

“It is not often that subjects as daunting as ‘governance’ and ‘boardroom practice’ are presented in an interesting and insightful way. The facilitators Janine Smith and Brent Wheeler were very open and conversational. We covered topics from the point of view of their own experiences and we were all able to ask questions and feel free to converse in a learning supportive environment. This was such a change from attending lectures and it made it so much easier to learn by bringing it alive for us.
The icing on the cake was the opportunity of talking one-on-one, no holds barred with a panel of ‘super’ directors, Danny Chan, Lyn Lin and Graeme Wong. There’s nothing like hearing it straight up from such experienced masters of the boardroom. Many thanks for putting together such a stimulating and worthwhile workshop. I am grateful for this tremendous opportunity to learn directly from experts”.
